As per census Gaya District has a population of 4,391,418 in 2011 out of which 2,266,566 are male and 2,124,852 are female. Population of Gaya District in 2020/2021 is 4,956,113(estimates as per aadhar uidai.gov.in feb 2019 data). Literate people are 2,297,613 out of 1,368,803 are male and 928,810 are female. People living in Gaya District depend on multiple skills, total workers are 1,664,062 out of which men are 1,076,170 and women are 587,892. Total 270,702 Cultivators are depended on agriculture farming out of 207,565 are cultivated by men and 63,137 are women. 411,942 people works in agricultural land as labor, men are 277,261 and 134,681 are women. Gaya District sex ratio is 937 females per 1000 of males. Next Gaya District Census will be in 2021. The district is famous for agricultural purposes mainly in the productivity of paddy and wheat crops and also known as Bowl of rice (Dhan ka Katora) in the State of Bihar. Rohtas has a fairly good system of road communication. The Grand Trunk Road traverses within the district. It serves as the main road link between Kolkatta and Delhi. It has undoubtedly been this high diversity within its boundaries that has so often made Rohtas in the frontier line of Indian civilization.
The district has a total area of 4,976 sq km., 85 sq km is urban and 4891 sq km is rural. Out of total population of 4,874,474 in the district, 581,601 are in urban area and 3,809,817 are in rural area. 89,642 households are in urban, 598,783 are in rural area. 401,705 literate people are in urban, 1,895,908 are in rural area.
